Boron deficiency
What you see
- Growing tips die back or grow hollow and twisted
- New leaves are thick, brittle and misshapen
- Roots stay short and brown
Why it happens
Boron is needed in tiny amounts. Dry conditions, very low humidity and a high pH reduce uptake. It is rare with complete nutrients.
What to do
- Keep watering regular and humidity reasonable
- Correct pH
- Use a complete nutrient; boron is toxic in excess, so do not dose it on its own
Next time
- Water evenly
- Use a complete nutrient line
Easy to confuse with
- Calcium deficiency: Small brown spots with sharp edges on new and middle leaves
- Heat stress: Leaves fold upwards along the middle like a taco
